Ignite the STEM in you

STEM Day is a yearly event highly anticipated by math and science enthusiasts. This year, though, was a little different. Instead of having a committee comprising only math and science teachers, the JC 2 students also lent a hand in organising the event. Having a fresher, young perspective on STEM resulted in a greater variety of games and activities, and an overall memorable day.

The event kicked off with a game called Last Man Standing, in which students and faculty members had to first answer questions related to the sciences. After several gruelling rounds, the remaining students had to partake in a different sort of competition that involved a series of experimental tasks, like flying an airplane, stacking cups by inflating balloons, or even constructing a crossbow out of seemingly random materials.

After a short break, the students were dispersed according to their respective activities: Stump the Expert, a jingle competition, or Amazing Race. In Stump the Expert, students had to build a pyramid comprised of smaller pyramids. Simultaneously, the jingle competition took place in the MPH, where music and the sciences intertwined. Perhaps the most complex event was the Amazing Race, in which students had to accomplish a number of tasks located all over the school grounds.

The final event was the highly competitive STEM fair, in which each class was required to give presentations about an assigned STEM topic. Some of these topics were magic in science, algorithms, and graphic design. After spending hours on their exhibits, the students’ work finally paid off when they received commendations from the judges.
